Volunteer

Over the last 12 years, volunteers have protected thousands of sea turtle nests and released hundreds of thousands of hatchlings back into the Pacific Ocean. Pretoma offers the experience to actively play a part in a sea turtle’s life cycle at two of our nesting beach project sites.

Volunteers not only work with sea turtles, but through home stays and other programs they provide economic opportunities of these coastal communities. As a future volunteer, your contributions will also build a sense of awareness among the local population regarding the importance and benefits that come from protecting these animals—the true definition of sustainable tourism.

Project Participant Program For the average volunteer, PRETOMA’s Participant Program offers a hands-on glimpse at real, on-the-ground, community-based conservation through stays of one week to five months. Projects open to participants include Punta Banco and Playa San Miguel. Prospective participants simply need to fill out a Participant Information Form 2009 and send it back via email to Braulio Odio (voluntarios@pretoma.org) in order to be placed with a project. 368-2 The turtle monitoring and conservation season at these sites runs from July through December (visit individual links above for specific dates and descriptions) of each year. Participants become immersed in the conservation project and the local culture, and speaking Spanish, while helpful, is certainly not a necessity (though you’ll have plenty of opportunity to practice!). The funds generated through these programs help provide an income for local community members and serve to sustain PRETOMA’s various sea turtle conservation projects along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The Team Two Research Coordinators, who are usually students or graduates in a related field, manage research activities. Community members are trained as “local monitors” and help with night patrols and data collection. 133-3354_img Participants and coordinators come from all over the world to assist with PRETOMA´s conservation efforts. We recommend a minimum stay of 2 weeks to really get to know the project and local community. Working in such a tight knit and unique situation, team members often forge strong bonds with one another, leading to friendships that last a lifetime! Volunteer Tasks: Night Beach Patrolls: Aproximately 3 hours walks monitoring sea turtle nesting activity. Data Register: Egg Collection, Turtle Measuring and Tagging. Hatcheries: Nest relocation and hatchling release after incubation period. Community Interaction (optional): English lesson at local school, environmental education, Art programs, local tours… Accommodations We offer several different accommodation options in our projects, depending on site. The majority of volunteers stay in each project’s Field Station or local cabins. In other projects, homestays and hotel stays are available – please see each project’s website to view housing options. It is important to remember that people living in coastal communities live and eat simply, and participants will do the same. Wherever you choose to participate, you will be part of the PRETOMA team and work with other participants from around the world and the local community to protect and monitor the eastern Pacific population of olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea). Research Coordinators and Assistants VolunteersFor those looking for a more long-term and in-depth commitment to PRETOMA’s sea turtle conservation programs, each year we select several Research Coordinators (RCs) that manage and coordinate the day-to-day running of each project. RC placements are unpaid and on a volunteer basis, however food and housing are provided by PRETOMA. Several Research Assistant (RA) positions are available for those wanting to gain more experience in the conservation field, and overall are vital to project success.   A financial contribution (dependent on site) from successful RA applicants is collected to offset the cost of food, shelter, and project supplies.  These positions require a commitment of two to five months, and are subject to a competitive application process.   Successful applicants are most often career-minded in the field of conservation and are advanced students or recent graduates in a related field.   Additional details about PRETOMA’s Research Coordinator and Research Assistant positions can be found here. If you are interested in applying for a RC or RA position, please contact Miguel Gómez (miguel@pretoma.org) AND (info@pretoma.org).
