Silky Sharks Also Need Protection
Dr. Edgar Gutiérrez Espeleta, Environmental Minister, Costa Rica
Dear Dr. Gutiérrez;
Please allow me to take a moment and express my concern over the population of silky sharks (Carcharhinus falciformis) in Costa Rica’s waters. The species is over exploited globally and its capture is prohibited in the Atlantic Ocean and the Western and Central Pacific. In the eastern Pacific, particularly in Costa Rica, this species continues to be caught without restrictions. Adding silky sharks to Appendix II of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) would provide the necessary tools to begin the species’ regional conservation. For this reason, I ask you to assure that Costa Rica votes in favor of silky sharks during the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP 11) in Quito, Ecuador on November 4-9, 2014.
